He isa good choice for the task of translating Lang Tuteng. It is his years of experience oftranslating Chinese contemporary literary works and the Penguin Group's intention tointroduce into unique Chinese culture that lay a strong foundation for the translatedversion of WolfTotem to be well accepted in the target culture.Secondly, Goldblatt's adaptive selection of the finalization of the target text issuccessful He chose to omit 1/5 of the original text which includes the epigrams of eachchapter, some repetitious and irrelevant contents in the main body and the epilogue of alecture on Chinese history, and therefore produced a concise and readable English noveltransformed from a didactic and repetitious Chinese semi-autobiography. Furthermore, headded "Translator's Note", a Chinese map and a glossary which brings the target readersnear to the source text and source author and give the former an opportunity to travel inthe world created by the latter.Thirdly, during the transformation of the source text from linguistic, cultural andcommunicative dimensions, Goldblatt adopted both domestication and foreignization.Domestication is dominant at the linguistic dimension to help produce a fluent andreadable English novel, and foreignization is dominant in the cultural and communicativedimensions to stay faithful to the source text and writer, satisfy the western readers' needto experience exotic foreign culture and promote the Chinese culture's stride onto theworld stage.In brief, Goldblatt's Wolf Totem is a successful example of our Chinese literaturewalking onto the world stage, and it casts much light on C-E translation for translators,scholars and students of English majors.Although the thesis is very important to the study of the novel, there still remainsome limitations. First, the English version of Wolf Totem was published in 2008， so thereare very few first-hand materials on the research. Besides, there is not very much study onthe translator, Goldblatt. Therefore, the indirect information got by the author is far fromconvincing. Secondly, the ecological theory of translation studies is a new-emerging andthus not very mature theory, so the application of it is somewhat difficult. Last, since WolfTotem is the only one English version of Jiang Rong's Lang Tuteng, a comparative study isnot possible. As a result, we can not exactly examine Goldblatt's degree of holisticadaptation and selection in his translation of the novel. So, in the future, the author of thepaper will continue to make research on the theme and hope more scholars will devotetheir efforts to the field.
