that vocabulary can be dividedinto core vocabulary, and topic expanding vocabulary by the teaching materials.Different vocabulary teaching should depend on the different requirements. Studentsare the main active part in English learning, which means effective teaching cannot beaccomplished withou the participation and coordination of the students.Since the eighties in the last century, a vast amount of books on vocabularylearning strategies have been brought out. Within China, the study of vocabularylearning strategies were not paid enough attention before 1970’s. D. A. Wilkins, alexical semanticist, had stressed this point in particular. From primary to secondary,vocabulary has went through a considerable change in foreign language learning inChina. Since 1990’s,English learners have thought that there had always been aconnection between vocabulary and language learning. Besides, the studies on thevocabulary learning strategies managed to draw scholars’ attention. Some of themstudied the relations among reading, looking up dictionary and vocabulary learning.They believed that extensive reading can improve both the quality and the quantity ofthe vocabulary.


1.2 Research Significance
According to the observation based on the students, many of them are notdiligent enough while studying English. Furthermore, they do not have effectivevocabulary learning strategies. Laufer (1986) said that recent investigations pointedout a fact that vocabulary problems might be even more important than thosephonology and syntax. McCarthy (1990) states, “No matter how well the studentlearns grammar, no matter how suceessfully the sounds of second language aremastered, without words to express a wide range of meanings, communication in asecond language just cannot happen in any meaningful way.”Language learners find it is difficult to grasp vocabulary. It is absolutely essentialto carry on this vocabulary learning strategy research if we want to solve theseproblems. As a matter of fact, In the realistic teaching, many teachers have consideredvocabulary teaching as one of the teaching difficulties. The students also reflect thatthey spend a lot of time on vocabulary learning, but the results are not exactly whatthey are expecting. Investigating the students’ vocabulary learning strategies canprovide the teaching basis. Teachers endorse for the training on the vocabulary learning strategy, but few people really get to know their students’ vocabularylearning strategies.


Chapter 2 Literature Review


This chapter serves to provide you with a review on English learning strategies,vocabulary learning strategies, the theoretical foundation of the vocabulary learningstrategies, and the research from the world beyond and home within. The use oflanguage learning strategies can arouse the students’ study interest and enthusiasm,build up their confidence, improve their language skills, and develop the ability ofself-directed inquiry. Therefore, the study on the language learning strategies hasattracted the attention of the scholars all over the world. For dacades, learningstrageies has always been a subject in great demand in the domain of Education andpsychology research.At present, domestic and foreign scholars have conducted a great deal ofresearch on the definition, structure, measurement and the development of students assubjects.
