摘要:本文是一篇小学英语教学论文,本研究尝试用自然拼读法和绘本相结合,通过绘本中的有趣故事和图画调动学生的学习兴趣,让学生在语境中理解和掌握词汇,从而提高综合语言运用能力。

本文是一篇小学英语教学论文,本研究通过访谈,学生在学习自然拼读过程中所遇到的困难得以发现。对于优等生而言,他们对不符合拼读规律的词汇感到困惑。中等生认为区分长元音和短元音是难点。学困生则受困于长单词的拼写。

Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research

The pace of economic globalization is accelerating.Especially when fifteenAsia-Pacific countries signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership in2020,which means the relation between China and the world get closer,Englishregarded as the official language has become a language of overwhelming importance.As the role that English speaking and writing skills play has become more outstanding,English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education(2022)pointed out thatphonetics teaching was one of the important contents of language teaching,besidesnatural and normative pronunciation and intonation would lay a good foundation foreffective oral communication.About graded objectives,it mentioned students inGrade Five or Grade Six who were required to reach Level 2 could read simple wordsaccording to the rules of spelling.Besides,they should learn vocabulary according tothe sound,meaning and form.Thus it is necessary to teach students the rules ofpronunciation and spelling.

For all the English learners of young ages,vocabulary plays a basic and crucialrole in language learning(Li Ronghua,2022).A survey was conducted on what thepupils wanted to improve about English learning in class,and almost all the studentsin Grade Five wrote down“words”and“pronunciation”,which showed vocabularylearning was a difficulty in English learning.In fact,although pupils have goodmemory,the words they remembered are quite easy to be forgotten,which leads tolow classroom efficiency(Wen Shuyan,2021).Firstly,it is because vocabularyteaching is ignored sometimes with the influence of traditional teaching principle of“listening and speaking first”(Shi Tiantian,2016).Teachers spend much time inpractising students’skills of listening and speaking instead of teaching vocabulary.The lack of learning context leads to memorizing words mechanically.Secondly,polysemy is a prevailing phenomenon in English and students can’t match the wordwith the correct meaning(Zhang Jidong,2020).

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study

As for the theoretical significance,the study is focus on the combination ofphonics and picture books on which only a few researchers keep their eyes.Phonicshas been broadly used in English speaking countries for a long time.Many foreigneducators consider it as the most effective way to teach pupils to read and writeEnglish.However,it has become a hot topic in China only in recent years.Among allthe studies,most of them emphasized on how to apply phonics to English learningsimply based on researchers’experience rather than statistics explanation.So there areno enough evidences to prove whether phonics is suitable for Chinese students.And itis not clear whether phonics taught with picture books is more effective than withoutpicture books.What’s more,only a few researchers tried to use phonics in fifthgraders’vocabulary class.Therefore,this research finds the effectiveness of phonicsapplied with English picture books,and enriches the theories of vocabulary teaching.
