Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research

All human civilizations exist because of language,and the life of language is inseparablefrom metaphor.It is no exaggeration to conclude that metaphor is a fundamental feature ofhuman language,and human language is a metaphorical system of signs.The study ofmetaphor has a long history,and the exploration of it has been uninterrupted in both ancientand modern times.Initially,it was carried out in the fields of rhetoric and semantics,considered as a phenomenon of rhetoric.It was not until the 1980s that the mysteriouscognitive veil of metaphor was unmasked.Since then,the study of metaphor has brokenthrough the constraints of rhetoric and made the leap from traditional rhetoric tocontemporary cognitive metaphor.Therefore,cognitive metaphor is a young and dynamicdiscipline backed by a long history.

At present,the study of metaphor is an academic frontier issue of common interest inmultidisciplinary fields such as linguistics,logic,cognitive psychology,art and computerinformation science.Over the past thirty years,the intense interest in metaphor in theinternational academic community has continued to push it forward.Since the 1980s,thestudy of metaphor has entered a new stage of cognitive research.After decades of explorationand development,researchers have found that the single-modal metaphor of language hasgreat limitation.With the development of new media technology,single-modal language cannot fully meet the needs of people to communicate with each other.Scholars began to focuson the language symbols of images,sounds,movements,touch,spatial layout and othermodes beyond verbal words.The book Pictorial Metaphor in advertising by Dutch scholarForceville,Charles(1996)was the first to explore the visual dimension of pictorial metaphors in advertising,breaking the limitation of scholars’research on metaphors to the purelylinguistic level and expanding metaphor research to a multimodal platform.Since then,thestudy of metaphor has realized a leap from purely linguistic textual modality tomultimodality.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research

From the perspective of cognitive linguistics,the thesis aims to identify and analyze themultimodal metaphors in the film Homeless to Harvard on the basis of conceptual metaphortheory and multimodal metaphor theory.The purpose of the study is to research the types anddistribution of multimodal metaphors in Homeless to Harvard,explore the ways of differentmodes interacting with each other to construct multimodal metaphors and complete meaningconstruction,further expand the research scope of multimodal metaphors,and provide someclues for the practical application of multimodal metaphors to films.
