Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research

Every day,China undergoes new developments in inclusive aspects as a result ofits rapid growth,leading to significant improvements in people’s lives.In such acircumstance,it has become an urgent topic to make people in other countries knowmore about the beauty of Chinese culture.To strengthen the exchanges of humanitiesall over the world and enhance the cultural discourse power and the images of thenation,the Chinese culture dissemination strategy of“going global”has been writtenin the agenda since 2006.In this context,the translation of China’s literary works canbe considered a suitable channel to improve the dissemination of Chinese culture.Among the literary works,the translation and dissemination of Chinese classics havegradually drawn more attention from national departments,the academic community,and other parties.A series of publishing projects for the dissemination of Chineseclassics,including“Library of Chinese Classics”as the first major national project tocomprehensively interpret Chinese cultural classics(Lyu,2021:170),have beencarried out.Translation Center of Chinese Classics has been founded at ShantouUniversity and many other universities,which have also set up new majors in thetranslation of Chinese classics to issue a master’s degree or even higher degrees(Wang,2012:10).In addition,seminars on the topics of the translation of Chineseclassics have also been held regularly.Thus,the undertaking of Chinese ClassicsTranslation has made fundamental progress through a variety of activities.

1.2 Methodology of the Research

The study employs the Paratext Theory as the theoretical support with an aim toresearch the paratexts of two complete English renderings of Xunzi.This sectionprovides an overview of the analytical framework and analytical procedures used inthis case study.

First,it is a descriptive translation study.In view of the fact that the researchobject of this thesis is the paratext in two English renderings of Xunzi,the objective isto sort out the development of the paratext in the parallel translation of differentperiods,locate its functions and status,and discover the differences.The paper takesdescriptive translation research as the rationale.

Second,there will be four steps in the research route.Firstly,the author willcategorize the paratexts in the two renditions.Secondly,on the basis of the first step,the author will summarize the main features and differences of different paratexts inthe two renditions from the perspective of a thick translation strategy.Thirdly,theauthor will try to locate the functions of the paratexts in the two renditions.Finally,the author will take efforts to interpret the differences between the two renderingswith the help of the features and functions of the paratexts.
