Chapter Three Strategies for the Construction of Black Subjectivity in Jesmyn Ward’s Novels

3.1 Representation of Violence: Implication for Construction of Subjectivity

英语文学论文题目参考

There has been a lack of scrutiny of violence in our public consciousness. The definition of violence is understandable, which refers to those behaviors that control, injure and destroy life by external force permeated every field. Issues of ecology and race run through Ward’s works, fully demonstrating the connection between the “anti-black climate” (Sharpe 104) and racial violence. Ward connects “hidden violence” (Zuo 110), that is, human oppression against nature and violent counterattack of nature, with oppression between humans, which reflects her expectation that black people will be able to resist oppression.

Due to the trauma of history and the dilemma of reality, the black people have been in a state of repression. The phenomenon of being treated as an object has fundamentally hindered their further development, which has seriously undermined their sense of subjectivity. Therefore, how to construct the subjectivity of the black community has become a major issue that is constantly considered and addressed in Jesmyn Ward’s novels.

It is an attempt in this thesis to explore the absence and construction of subjectivity of the black community in Ward’s three novels, Where the Line Bleeds, Salvage the Bones and Sing, Unburied, Sing. The characters in these novels all face various crises caused by the background and social environment, reflecting the problem of subjectivity common to the black community at that time. The thesis analyzes absence and awakening of the characters’ subjectivity as well as explores strategies for the construction of subjectivity among the black community in Ward’s novels. It is argued that her novels place the construction of black subjectivity in the representation of the violence suffered by the black people, the construction of harmonious 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
