4.1 Orlando’s Multiple Selves

Orlando lived through more than four hundred years in the book, from the Elizabethan era when he was born until the early 20th century. Although the world around him was constantly changing, Orlando himself seems to have remained unchanged for most of this time. The only two things that remained the same with Orlando were his estate (and the servants in it) and the large oak tree in the estate. These two images, like Orlando himself, are both in endless social constraints and a manifestation of queer identity. 

The mansion, located in Blackfriars, runs through the beginning and end of the story. Compared to other things in the book, it appears to be completely still, regardless of how the outside world changes. This huge mansion has fifty-two staircases and three hundred and sixty-five rooms, clearly a metaphor for a whole year. but unlike linear time, in which a normal person must go through every single day in sequence, Orlando can move freely in the hallways of the estate, go inside and out in every room, it’s like a person moving back and forth in time. Although Orlando cannot travel freely in time, this clever arrangement turns the originally straight time into a manifestation of queer time. The mansion stands firm for more than four hundred years, regardless of the changes in the outside world, just like Orlando himself always exists in queer time throughout his life. Thus, Orlando and the house itself are integrated, both possessing the queer characteristics inherently. The house is no longer just a house, but a resistance or escape of Orlando’s inner queer identity to the straight world.
