Chapter 2 Theoretical Foundation

2.1 The Definition of Homi K.Bhabha’s Hybridity

In Homi K.Bhabha's post-colonial theory,the concept of hybridity is the most frequentlycited and the most important.From the beginning,hybridity is a biological term.It refers toanimals or plants derived from a wide variety of animals or plants.The hybridity of Homi K.Bhabha refers to cross-cultural forms with more than twocultural characteristics.It is not only a mixture of both sides,but also has the incomparableadvantages.Culture is not completely isolated.In contrast,they fuse,collide and exchangeeach other and then create cultural hybridities.It was hybridity that ensured the harmoniousexistence of cultural differences,and Homi K.Bhabha believed that hybridity mightundermine the authority of the colonized culture and help the colonized culture intodominance.Homi K.bhabha's hybrid theory not only provides a theoretical basis for theacademic community to study cultural identity and ethnic minorities,but also providesspecific strategies for the third world critics to hear their own voices.

2.2 The Evolving of Homi K.Bhabha’s Hybridity

To study Homi K.Bhabha's hybrid theory,we have to mention Bakhtin's hybrid theory.This theory is regarded as the most direct basis of the hybridity,which established his ownhybrid theory by the influence of Bakhtin's linguistics.But before the advent of Bakhtin'slinguistic hybrid theory,the words'hybrid'still appeared in many fields,related toethnography today.The original debate was about whether'black'and'white'were the samespecies and the same ancestor.In the 18th century,Europeans generally believed that blackpeople and white people could not be the same species and the same ancestor.Black peoplewere naturally considered as the lowest people.They were naturally stupid,barbaric anduncivilized,and could only exist as slaves of their own people.After the 19th century,peoplecarried out the liberation movement of black people and slaves,and gradually began to thinkthat black people and white people had the same ancestors and belonged to the same species.The debate started from here.In order to prove the question of whether black people andwhite people were the same species,people at that time were associated with different speciesof donkeys and horses.Their hybrid offspring,pozhehaomules,could not reproduceindependently,so the question of whether black and white people were the same speciesbecame into the question of'whether black and white descendants can reproduce independently'.This issue was debated for a long time until Darwin explained the issue ofrace by evolution,and the study of ethnic hybridization played an important role in the studyof Homi K.Bhabha's ethnic identity.
