Chapter 2 Theoretical Foundation

2.1 Evolving of Narrative Theory

Since Aristotle’s exploration of plot in the Poetics,Western narrative theory has been indevelopment for more than two thousand years.17“Narrative theory is reaching a moreadvanced and comprehensive level,”says Bryan Richardson.18 Narrative theory in the 18thand 19th centuries was still in its infancy and did not form a mature theoretical system.Narrative theory was also further developed.The term narratologie appeared only in 1969 inthe French scholar Tzvetan Todorov’s book The Grammar of the Decameron.19 The late 19thand early 20th centuries were an important period when the theory of the Anglo-Americannovel began to mature and systematize.20The contemporary period was the most importantperiod for“narrative”and the most developed period for narrative theory in Western history.Although there are many different schools of thought,classical narrative and post-classicalnarrative constitute the mainstream of contemporary narrative theory.

The narratological community regards Aristotle,who is concerned with plot structure,asthe originator of narratology.Narratologists’exploration of narrative perspective andnarrative distance always goes back to scholars belonging to another line,such as Plato,James,Lubbock and Booth.Genette’s Narrative Discourse as a masterpiece of narratology,which inherits and develops the tradition of Booth’s The Rhetoric Offiction in the study ofnarrative statutes.The two main tracks of development on narrative analysis since themid-twentieth century:rhetorical narrative studies originating from Aristotle and narratologyoriginating from Russian formalism tend to intermingle from the 1990s onwards,formingnumerous interdisciplinary post-classical narrative schools.

2.2 An Introduction to Genette’s Narrative Theory

Genette analyzes and develops the theoretical achievements of his predecessors andestablishes his own narrative theory.The New Narrative Discourse is a masterpiece in hisanalysis of narrative works from a structuralist point of view,which can greatly help us tostudy and analyze the structure and content of novels and serve as a standard reference forformal analysis in the study of literary works.Genette’s narrative theory enables a clearanalysis and treatment of the structure and complex relationships of narratives in texts.

2.2.1 Narrative Mood

Of all the issues involving narrative technique since the end of the 19th century,the pointof focus has been one of the most widely studied.But Genette argues that two entirelydifferent questions have been confused in previous studies:Which character’s point of viewguides the point of observation?Who is the narrator?Or simply put,who is watching?Who istalking to whom?In 1972,Genette introduced the term“Focalization”in Narrative Discourse,thereby distinguishing it from the previous term,which had an overly specialized visualmeaning.
