　　1.4 Research Methodology研究方法
　　The present dissertation takes quantitative and qualitative researches as its formof investigation, expected to examine the conversational implicature in MP created byviolating the maxims of CP and using 15 off-record strategies. The quantitativeresearch is employed to discover the distribution of the occurrences of the violatingthe maxims of CP and the exact numbers of the off-record strategies used in the novel.There are 33 dialogues being picked out among all the dialogues in the novel, whichare analyzed by making use of 15 off-record strategies respectively and containing thephenomenon of violation of CP. The qualitative research is undertaken to analyzehow conversational implicatures in MP are produced with cases selected from MP,and how characters do FTAs by making use of the theories of the CP and Leech's PP.

　　
　　1.5 The Organization of the Dissertation论文结构
　　This dissertation is made up of five chapters.Chapter One includes the research background, the significance of the study, theresearch methodology and the organization of the dissertation.Chapter Two is devoted to literature review which consists of four parts. Thefirst part is about the reviews and criticisms of Jane Austen. The second part is aboutthe essays and comments on Mansfield Park. And the third part is about thecombination of linguistics and literary studies. The last part aims to illustrate thesurveys of the CP and the PP.Chapter Three presents the theoretical framework of this dissertation: the CP andthe PP. The PP is proposed by Leech, Brown and Levinson to rescue Grice's CP,The two are the basic theories for conversational analysis in this dissertation. Thespeaker tends to convey his or her meaning in an indirect way by violating or floutingthe maxims of the principles. Thus, such conversational implicatures of the speakerwill be inferred through analysis based on the mentioned theories.Chapter Four is committed to case analysis. All the examples are from theconversations of MP and detailed analysis is made upon these conversations to provethat the flouting of the CP and doing the FTAs indirectly can generate theconversational implicature. The implicature analysis aims to reveal how the authordepicts characters' personalities and relationships by using those conversations.The last chapter is conclusion. A general summary is made and followed by thelimitations and suggestions for further research efforts.
