1.1 An Introduction to Anthony Doerr and All the Light We Cannot See

Anthony Doerr is a famous contemporary American writer,who was born in 1973 andgrew up in Cleverland,Ohio.He majored in history at Bowdoin College and earned aBachelor of Arts Degree in 1995.However,he did not stop studying and later he earned aMaster of Fine Arts degree at Bowling Green State University.Doerr now lives in Boise withhis family,and he works at the Warren Wilson School as a writing teacher.

Doerr has published several works in different genres,including novels,short storycollections and memoirs.After Doerr begins his writing career,he has won many literaryawards.His first book is The Shell Collector,a collection of short stories,which has won theO.Henry Prize and the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Fiction Award.Most of thoseshort stories happen in Africa and New Zealand,where Doerr has lived.Then,some scholarshave paid great attention to his second collection of short stories,Memory Wall,which haswon the O.Henry Prize as well as Ohioana Book Award.Apart from the collections of shortstories,Doerr’s novels have also attracted plenty of attention.Doerr’s first novel is AboutGrace,a science fiction novel came out in 2004.It won the Ohioana Book Award in 2005.Hissecond novel is All the Light We Cannot See,which took him ten years to complete.CloudCuckoo Land is Doerr’s latest novel,which is a historical and speculative fiction novelpublished in 2021 and shortlisted for the National Book Award for Fiction of the year.Moreover,Doerr has once written column on science books for The Boston Globe.

Doerr’s works have some writing characteristics in common.Doerr is skilled in thecomprehensive use of various rhetorical devices.Through the repetition of some keysentences and specific rhetorical images,his works have a complete and unified rhetoricalsystem.Besides,he often flexibly uses flashback,sequential narration and episodic narrationin the novel,which changes time interval of events in order to present a three-dimensionalnarrative time in the works.Then,many of his works combine the reality with fantasy andreaders can experience the profound curiosity of the unknown world through travellingalongside characters in the novel.In addition,his works often embody his strong ecologicalconsciousness.He loves and respects the nature due to his unique life experience and thenature is the eternal theme in his novels.

1.2 Literature Review

From his first novel,About Grace,Anthony Doerr has received great attention fromforeign and domestic literary critics and scholars.His second novel,All the Light We CannotSee,has been widely praised since its publication in 2014.It wins the Pulitzer Prize andestablishes Doerr’s status among American writers.Up to now,foreign and domestic scholarshave made lots of studies on it.

1.2.1 Studies Abroad
