1.1 An Introduction to E.L.Doctorow
Edgar Lawrence Doctorow(1931-2015)is a famous contemporary American Jewishwriter who occupies an important position in the history of American literature.He has beencalled the American Charles Dickens.Doctorow was born on Clinton Street,New York,onJanuary 6,1931,into a Jewish-American family.Doctorow's parents were intellectuals whoprovided good family education for him and played an important role in his literaryattainments.His parents named him Edgar in the hope that he would become as great a writeras Edgar Allen Poe.
Doctorow's first literary work was a short story,The Beetle,published in the campusmagazine Dynamo.He later joined a journalism class to train his writing skills and to broadenhis horizons by interviewing a wide variety of people.This experience promoted his literaryaccumulation,laid an important foundation for his writing career,and stimulated his creativeability to discover true stories.In 1948,he was admitted to Kenyon College in Ohio,where heencountered the poet John Crowe Ransom.Phillip Blair Rice,a philosopher,also impartsphilosophical thought to his novels.He described“the experience in Kenyon College as a realcollege life”.After receiving a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1952,he returned to NewYork and enrolled at Columbia University,where he studied English theater and theaterwriting.From 1953 to 1954,he served in the army for two years.His military experience hasled him to serve and fight in the war in many of his novels.After his discharge,he returned toNew York.To make ends meet,he worked seven days a week reviewing scripts for the motionpicture company,a film and television company in New York.Reading bad scripts day afterday forced him to decide to take up writing instead.In 1969,he quit his job and began writingas a professional writer.
1.2 An Introduction to Homer and Langley
