Chapter 5 Conclusion

5.1 Major findings

The thesis mainly aims at analyzing three meta-functions of the discourse markersyou know and I mean,especially their transitivity,mood system and cohesive functions.Through analyzing,several findings are summarized.

Firstly,through analyzing the meaning development and meta-functions of you knowand I mean and comparing the differences between them,the primary use of you know andI mean is clear:I mean refers to actions made by speaker,and it places emphasis on theexplanation of the speaker’s word,while you know is also the speaker’s action,but itfocuses on attracting the listener’s attention.

Secondly,by analyzing the transitivity of you know and I mean,the study finds thatthe main process of the discourse markers you know and I mean are focusing on thematerial process,mental process and verbal process.

Thirdly,by analyzing the mood system of you know and I mean,we find that both ofthem are mostly used in indicative mood and interrogative mood,and they are sometimesused in exclamation mood.What’s more,the study concludes seven interpersonalfunctions of discourse marker you know and four interpersonal functions of discoursemarker I mean,and analyzes which interpersonal function is used in which context.
