gnizes the limitations of humanrationality, but, on the other hand, it sets a higher level of rationality and understanding.Absurdity is the denial of the existing interpretation of the world and the existence of life, and, in a skeptical way, proposes the meaning and values of the world and life. Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1The Study of The Awakening At Home
The Awakening received widespread attention upon publication, but was sooncaught in a fierce storm of criticism, after which no one showed any interest in it. Thework is now regarded as an important contribution to early American feminism. In China, academic researchers focus primarily on feminism, symbolism, and linguistics. In the field of feminism, Liu YingZi analyzed Chopin’s Awakening from thepsychological feminist view in 2008. Through analysis, Liu came to see that, in thenineteenth century, women were still members of collective unconscious and bore allkinds of associated pressures. They also believed that they could inhabit only traditionalroles and functions in the family and must maintain the patriarchal cultural rule of men.The Awakening demonstrated the psychological journey of some “awakened” women. In2009, Zhang Xiaoqing interpreted this work from the view of social feminism; she camemainly from a sociological background when explaining the reasons for awakening. In2013, Xu Qing Hong, who worked at Anhui University, interpreted The Awakening fromthe perspective of feminist narratology, believing that Chopin challenged male narrativeauthority and constructed a female writing style by using a narrative language form andinner-focused reflections. Still others interpreted the book from the perspective ofEmerson’s transcendentalism, so it is clear that the interpretations of The Awakening arediverse and not the same. In 2013, NaiMu analyzed this work from the perspective ofecofeminism, emphasizing the importance of the natural environment for awakening. Onthe basis of feminism, scholars have studied the awakening of female consciousness, theconstruction of female subject consciousness, and the characteristics of female characters. These studies employed an interdisciplinary approach to expand the research space ofThe AwakeningIn the field of symbolism, Wang Yan in 2009 evaluated the work from a symbolicpoint of few, arguing that The Awakening is a symbolic novel for the author, who oftenuses powerful symbols in the narration.

The translatorof The Awakening into French, Arnavon also explored the significance of the novel, saying that the novel is a realistic work of expression and marriage. In 1969, PerSeyersted, a Norwegian, published the first and most comprehensive review of Chopin’sbiography. The book praised the seriousness of The Awakening, pointing out that theattitude of Chopin towards women and sex was more liberal than many other writers inthe same period.
