work that expressed a complex relation between the arts. Emily Toth believed that TheAwakening was feminist criticism in the form of novel, while Edna was the embodimentof feminist criticism. Form the perspective of feminist criticism, Elaine Showalter saidthat The Awakening was a revolutionary book: both a summary of traditional literatureand a marked departure from the tradition. Another study direction of The Awakening iscalled “New historicism
methodology”, which studies this novel from the perspective ofhistory, viewing an era’s literature as a special product of a period’s ideological concepts, values, beliefs, and events. Patrivia S. Yaeger deconstructed the novel in “‘A Language Nobody Understood’: Emancipatory Strategies in The Awakening” and suggested thatEdna’s problem was entirely due to her lack of language and was subjected to be merelythe victim of a plot others had arranged for her. Paula A. Treichler also studied thelinguistic features of the novel, arguing that the language of the novel left readers with asense of confusion. From the latter half of the twentieth century on, The Awakening hasbeen praised as a classic of feminist literary work, clearly demonstrating that the public’simage of women is of a gradually revealing self constrained by traditional stereotypes.Today, people continue to offer varying theoretical methods to discuss the significance ofthe novel and its status in international literature. These studies continue primarily fromperspectives of gender and focus on the problem of women themselves.According to its research status at home and abroad, it can be seen that there is noserious academic study of The Awakening from the perspective of the aesthetics ofabsurdity. This
essay hopes to fill that gap in the literature.
