Fairy Queen (Gloriana) herself, is meant to represent Queen Elizabeth. The Red Cross Knight is the embodiment of Holiness, piety, and true religion(Protestantism). Una stands for truth, goodness and wisdom. For a Christian to be holy,he must have true faith. So Holiness must be grounded in Truth in order to remain pureand immaculate in the world. The plot of Book I mostly concerns the attempts ofevildoers to separate Red Cross from Una to decrease his strength. Most of thesevillains are meant by Spenser to represent one thing in common: the Roman CatholicChurch. The combination of Una and Red Cross Knight which is the combination oftrue faith and the Church of England forms a national religion of England. For Englishcolonizers, Christianity is one of the ways to differ from those savages. In this way, religion and civilization are just constructs that the English colonizers use to make theNew World easier to classify.

Chapter ThreeThe Way to Servanthood underAbsolute Sovereign

Behn went to the colony working as spy. What she saw of the slaves, andparticularly of the rule and practice done by the English settlers to rescue these fallenmen in the name of religion, made a striking appeal to her heart. Byam, DeputyGovernor of Surinam in Oroonoko, who had taken absolute control of the settlementand joined the colonial activities. The English settlers’ first thought was to achieve anambition only, sending converts to another race. The extraordinary mission was neverexhibited admirably than in the early days of the British conquest. England colonizersand their followers faced irresistible desire. It was like preaching in Hell, for the nativesof Surinam in those days were barbarous and recalcitrant. They were stubbornlyresistant to authority or control and unwilling to obey orders from these colonists. Before long in the same imperial idea these England settlers who had been servingSurinam with reliable colonial justification once got back on the track again with whichthey had always groping after colonial conquest and imperial power.According to Jon Sobrino, “there is personal salvation and social salvation, andthere is historical salvation and transcendent salvation” (Sobrino, 57). In Oroonoko, salvation is depicted as justification for colonialism in the name of religion. In 1630,Surinam was turned into a British colony. Later in the 1650s, slaves were imported intothe colony of Surinam from global parts. The essence of colonialism evolved fromEnglish colonizers’salvation to the other’s servanthood under absolute sovereign.
