was designed to demand more power andgreater sway over large segments of the world. As a matter of fact, the dream of theBritish empire, in effect, was virtually translated into reality in the late eighteenthcentury. It is crucial to begin by noting that the British empire requires an image as animperial nation. This self-image is often described as a formidable and omnicompetentnation. Moreover, this powerful country is best represented by these the settlers, pioneers of the British empire, who are to be involved in the course of externalexpansion, broadcasting an imperial ideology. The thing in which they believe is thesupremacy of imperial will. As it is in colonial legitimacy, so it is in foundation ofcolonial legitimacy. All of these justifications for the British empire will help Englandsettlers build colonial legitimacy in the New World, which will be vital to strengtheningthe relationship between the nation and its overseers. From the point of coloniallegitimacy, the arguments of this
thesis are grounded on two perspectives: coloniallegitimacy in cultural tradition and colonial legitimacy in geographic space. These twoperspectives represent approaches from the angle of time and space respectively. The English colonizers in Oroonoko are marked with the quality of ambition mindand kind manner. The colonizers continue the seeking for the traditional origin of theircolonial issues in the establishment of colonization with reliable justification forcolonial conquest. The colonial legitimacy in British colony, when it comes, has to begradual. British colonizers in Surinam gradually form an acceptable justification forexploring, a reasonable excuse for colonizing, and an established business model formarketing. The role of religion, nevertheless, is leading, in that it implies a system ofcolonial ruling in which Christianity and motivation of religion is formidable, andauthoritative values alone govern daily conduct in colonies. From Oroonoko, colonial legitimacy in tradition as a distinctly religious quintessence, with a set of classical textsand a variety of active religious practices, is the British empire’s orientation of theseventeenth century all over the world. The ideological awareness of the relationsbetween the colonizers and the colonized in the seventeenth century exposes theirinterrelation and inseparability in the early modern period.
