摘要:本文是一篇英语文学论文,笔者以德勒兹和瓜塔里的空间理论为基础,研究该小说的两位主人公凯瑟琳和希斯克里夫的自我与空间的关系。
At the very beginning of the novel, Emily Brontë let us see the eerie and terrifying appearance of Wuthering Heights through the eyes of Lockwood. The environment of Wuthering Heights is depicted as chilly, harsh, and unwelcoming. The sense of imprisonment prevails in Wuthering Heights.
The reader’s first impression of the Gothic Wuthering Heights is also obtained through Lockwood’s description. This place is named after “atmospheric tumult” prevailing in these regions, and is surrounded by “gaunt” and “stunted” trees (Brontë, 2003: 4). The perennial north wind howling around Wuthering Heights, the narrow windows, thick walls and strange rocks all give people a sense of depression and imprisonment. As Lockwood goes inside, the scene inside Wuthering Heights also comes into view. The threshold is covered with “grotesque carving” and the inside contains guns, “primitive” furniture hidden in shadows, and “haunting” dogs that quickly attacks the unarmed Lockwood (Brontë, 2003: 5). Through these descriptions and Lockwood’s palpable apprehension and fear, Emily Brontë creates an atmosphere of menace and hostility in Wuthering Heights.
2.2 Domination of Patriarchal Power in Two Estates
According to Deleuze and Guattari’s spatial theory, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange in this novel can undoubtedly be divided into hierarchical, organized and enclosed striated space. The two estates, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, are the residences of Heathcliff and Catherine. In Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross heights, patriarchal power dominates. Both Heathcliff and Catherine, who reside in the two estates, are monitored by patriarchal power, and any violation of the laws and norms of striated space is doomed to be disciplined and punished by patriarchal power. The selves of Heathcliff and Catherine are confined by patriarchal power in striated space.
In Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff, as an abandoned gypsy orphan with lowly origin, is regarded as an outsider of striated space and is belittled by people around him in striated space. After being brought from an unknown place into Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw, this savage outcast is given the name “Heathcliff”. “Heathcliff’s identity as an abandoned orphan is changed. Nevertheless, at the meantime, Heathcliff is deprived of the opportunity and freedom to express his spiritual self” (Ma Kun, 2003: 34). From then on, Heathcliff is gradually subject to the domination and suppression of patriarchal power. In striated space where patriarchal power dominates, Heathcliff, a gypsy orphan of lowly origin, is doomed to be maltreated and despised. Heathcliff is defined as a marginalized people in striated space, his identity cannot be recognized and accepted by striated space. When he is brought into striated space, his savage and tameless self is gradually subject to the imprisonment of striated space and forged by patriarchal power which regards his wild and liberated nature as a threat. Especially after the demise of the old patriarch of Wuthering Heights, Hindley becomes the new patriarch and Heathcliff is abused by him both 本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
