4.1 Through Flight

“Line of flight” is a key concept proposed by Deleuze. What is “line of flight”? According to the description of Deleuze, “line of flight” is an absolute deterritorialization movement. “Flight” is not intended to flight from the world, but to enable the world to flight. “Flight” allows captured and confined individuals in striated space to escape, and allows the rigid social system to escape in all directions. As Deleuze states in Dialogues: “The single and greatest mistake in thinking about line of flight is to think about flight from life... Instead, to flight is to produce reality, to create life, to find weapons” (Deleuze, 1996: 49). Therefore, line of flight is a line of creation and deterritorialization. It emphasizes opposition to rigid authority and aims to create possibilities, freedom and new life.

In Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë employs the strategy of flight to enable Catherine and Heathcliff to escape from striated space to smooth space. Catherine asks her servant to open the window before her demise, and she escapes from striated space to smooth space through the window beside her bed after her demise. Likewise, Heathcliff escapes from striated space to smooth space through Catherine’s bedroom window under the call of Catherine’s ghost. Both of them enter smooth space from striated space through the strategy of flight. Windows provide passage of flight for Heathcliff and Catherine. The windows in the novel are like “line of flight” proposed by Deleuze and Guattari. Windows serving as passage of flight provide Heathcliff and Catherine with opportunity to escape from striated space and enter into smooth space. 

Chapter Five Conclusion

Wuthering Heights is the masterpiece of Emily Brontë. As one of the most shocking and singular works of the nineteenth century, this novel is quite different from other Victorian novels with its complex connotations and violent emotions. In the light of smooth space and striated space theory of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, this thesis explores the relationships between space and the self, which include the causes of self-confinement in striated space, the methods of self-expression in smooth space and the strategies of self-construction from striated space to smooth space.
