The focus of the study is to systematically analyze Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights within the theoretical foundation of smooth space and striated space, through which the prominence of space will be highlighted, which will further reveal the significant role of smooth space and striated space in the self-confinement, self-expression and self-construction of Catherine and Heathcliff. This thesis will be rooted in the textual analysis with the support of the spatial theory of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari.

According to Deleuze and Guattari’s spatial theory, the space in Wuthering Heights can be divided into striated space and smooth space. The thesis mainly studies the following three questions:

(1) Why are the selves of Catherine and Heathcliff confined in striated space? (2) How do Catherine and Heathcliff express their selves in smooth space? (3) What strategies does Emily Brontë employ to enable Catherine and Heathcliff to achieve self-construction from striated space to smooth space?

1.2 Literature Review

1.2.1 Previous Studies on Wuthering Heights Abroad

At the very beginning of the publication of Wuthering Heights, it encountered numerous negative criticism and unfavorable comments. Some critics held the opinion that Wuthering Heights is a “fearsome”, “bloodcurdling” and “disgusting story”, and the name of this novel should be changed to “Withering Heights”. There were many people who misapprehended and underestimated Wuthering Heights at that time. After years of obscurity, the literary and artistic value of Wuthering Heights has withstood the test of time. At the same time, the name of Emily Brontë stepped into the field of literature with a burgeoning reputation. Since then, western researchers and scholars have begun to study the different aspects of Wuthering Heights from different perspectives such as thematic study, feminism, image and so on.

From the perspective of thematic study, Tahmina (2000) studies the laws in Wuthering Heights and believes that Emily clandestinely expresses in the novel that although positive law possesses its advantages, it must ultimately be overruled by natural law. Graeme Tytler (2013) studies the role of fire in Wuthering Heights. He believes that the fireplace related to fire is the source of happiness and plays a significant role in shaping Hindley, Frances, Isabella and Linton Heathcliff. Graeme Tytler (2016) also studies the weather in Wuthering Heights. He believes that the description of the weather in the novel supports the realism of the narrative to a certain extent, and also plays a major role in revealing information about certain characters.

Chapter Two Causes of Self-confinement in Striated Space

In the novel, the two estates, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, belong to striated space.
