2.1 Introduction of the Garden Path Sentence
Garden path effect/phenomenon is discussed at length by Stanley Fish in hisbook Surprised by Sin. He argues that the incremental parsing of sentences one isreading needs to be addressed by literary theorists. He also covers this topic in severalessays from his book Is there a text in this Class! And GP sentences get the namefrom this phenomenon.Frederick Luis Aldama (2010) mentions that a GP sentence is often brought aboutby "tricking readers into reading nouns as adjectives and vice versa, and leaving outdefinite and indefinite articles that would otherwise guide the reader to a correctinterpretation". Different scholars have different standards to define GP sentences. Inorder to find a practible and accurate definiton of GP sentences, we are to talk aboutthe definitions given by Carroll and Ferreira detailedly, the two of whom are qutieprestigious in the research field of GP comprehension.

2.1.1 Definition
Carroll (2000) exemplifies his definition like the following, who uses sentenceslike (1) and (2) to define his understanding of GP sentences.
(1) The novice accepted the deal before he had a chance to check his finances,which put him in a state of conflict when he realized he had a straight flush.
(2) I was afraid of Ali，s powerful punch, especially since it had already laid outmany tougher men who had bragged they could handle that much alcohol.
The word "deal" in (1) has two distinct meanings: one is related to businesstransaction , and the other is about card games. When getting to the word "finances",we may confirm that the former meaning is suitable here. However when "straightflush" appears, we find ourselves misled to a wrong interpretation. It is the same with(2) that the word "punch" may mean either an alcocholic beverage or a blow by thefist. And the name "Ali" is easily to remind us of the world-famous boxing championMohamed Ali, which gives us a strong sense that "punch" means "blow". Howeverthe right interpretation is that "Ali" is only the brand of the drink.
