The present study is not free of limitations, though carefully designed andconducted. And these findings are not generalized for all Chinese English learners butthey pertain to this thesis that limits my study.
First of all, the present study has had its group of participants made upexclusively of college freshmen, which would limit the generalizability of theconclusions, since the participants may have some common features that differentiatethem from other English learners, like advanced English learners. It would have beenmuch better do with more diversified samples.
Second, individual differences, such as gender differences, in the ability toexecute cognitive processes must ultimately be underpinned by individual differencesin neural functioning, but our experiment did not involve measuring methodsconnecting with neural factors, and our explanation was based on hypothesis. We haveno powerful evidence to further prove that gender differences cause the differences inthe GP disambiguation, though gender differences in GP sentences comprehensionwere revealed with a relatively small number of participants in the current study. Partsof the findings are tentative. For future work, more advanced study methods, such asmass qualitative and quantitative research, corpus-based study and linguistic andbehavioral experiment (e.g., ERPs and fMRI) should be employed in such studiesconcerning gender factors.
The third is that the factor, working memory capacity of second languagelearners, is not included in the study, which can affect Chinese English learners'comprehension of GP sentences to some degree. Many scholars abroad havecompared the factor between native English speakers and other language speakers.For further study, working memory capacity should be involved for a morecomprehensive and systematic understanding of GP comprehension.
In spite if the limitations listed above, we still believe that our study has itsmerits. First of all, none of the main research works to date concerning GPcomprehension have involved gender differences in the study. Gender differenceshave great impact on the comprehension of GP sentences, which is clearlydemonstrated in our study. What's more, both relevant theories and the collected dataare employed to answer the questions of the study. And the study is open to any denialand criticism.
