Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background

With the continuous development of mobile network and the popularity of smartphones, the development of short video apps is becoming more and more rapid, and itsuser scale is also expanding. Just as Li Maomao (2019) mentioned , as of June 2019, thenumber of online video users in China has reached 758 million. What’s more, a varietyof short videos applications have become indispensable parts of people’s lives.

The emergence of short videos not only brings people happiness, but also providesnew ideas for the development of modern educational technology. In other words, therapid development of information technology promotes the progress of moderneducational technology, which optimizing the educational environment, and improvingthe use value of information technology and modern information resources in educationand teaching by integrating information technology with disciplines. This is the trend ofthe new curriculum reform. Short videos provide a new development path foreducational informatization. Short videos can be used as a new multimedia teachinginstrument to strengthen the connection between the information technology and courseteaching, which can help teachers “teach” and promote students to “learn”. At present,more and more schools vigorously promote the use of modern teaching tools, and equipclassrooms with computers, projectors, tablet computers and many other modernteaching equipment. This also provides the basis for short videos used in teaching. It is ageneral trend to apply short videos to teach.

Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, short for Liangshan, is located in thesouthwest of Sichuan Province. There are 17 counties and 184 middle schools. In thepast, due to the limitation of transportation and communication, English education inprimary and secondary schools in Liangshan was still very backward. Most of thestudents began to learn English from the first day of junior high school. They learningEnglish for examination, which caused the English classes so boring and difficult thatmany students gave up learning English. Even now, there are still many boring classes.

1.2 Research Purposes

This paper surveyed the current situation of using short videos in junior highschool English teaching and attempted to use short videos in junior high school Englishteaching, which tried to figure out that if using short videos in junior high schoolEnglish teaching can improve students’ English grades; and tried to find out that whatare the advantages and disadvantages of using short videos in junior high school Englishteaching. The author did this research for offering teachers a new way to using shortvideos in junior high school English teaching.

Chapter 2 Literature Review
