摘要:The thesis aims to find more practical ways and methods in English homework designand assignments which are more suitable for middle school students, thus to enrich thevarieties of the English homework design.

Chapter I Introduction


1.1 Research background
Before the coming of the International Children’s Day of 2011,the students ofShijiazhuang Dongfenglu Primary School received Premier Wen Jiabao’ reply. In the letter toPremier Wen, the students wrote, “We think that the times of exam are too many, and thecontents are just from our textbooks. To say honestly, we think it is very boring anduninteresting. We do the recitation practice over and over again, just like a repeater runningday and night. It makes us tired.”What they wrote in the letter revealed the status of most students in primary and middleschools:
● the outdoor activities become less and less;
● most children are grinded down by homework;
● most homework is boring and uninteresting;
● the contents and types of homework are simplified and vapid.

Though the question of reduction of students’ study burden has been discussed byeducators and government for years, it has not been solved completely and still exists in manyprimary and middle schools.Early in 1994 and 2000, the former National Education Commission issued to reduce theoverweight schoolwork burden. It clearly stated the time for middle school students tocomplete their homework should not exceed 1.5 hours. But from some research results andthe author’ questionnaire, it can be shown that:
● students’ time for homework is far beyond 1.5 hours, some even till 3 hours per day;
● there is too much rote homework including recitation, words copying and paperswriting;
● the homework types are mostly in written form, less in oral and performing;
● the differences of students are seldom considered in homework design;
● there is more homework for consolidation than practice; more individual work thancooperative work; more unified layout than free choices;
● doing extra homework (especially coping many times of certain words) is often usedto punish less advanced student by some teachers.
The problems above are not consistent with the concept and essence of the new NationalEnglish Curriculum which emphasizes competence-oriented education, individual differencesand the multi-Assessments. It also does not agree with the relevant item which claims toreduce the overloaded burden of the students in the Outline of National Education Reform andDevelopment of Long-term Planning Programs.The author made a survey by using a questionnaire before the research. The result showsthat 58.6 percent of the students think their main homework types are word coping andrecitation which are considered as a waste of time or they think these kinds of work aren'treally of much use. As to the time to complete homework, 31.5 percent of the studentsneeded about half an hour and 49.7 percent of the students needed one hour, the rest 5.5percent need two hours. From the answers to the open questions of the questionnaire, thereare 38.4 percent of the students who think that doing too much of exercises are tiring becausethey also have a lot of homework of other subjects to complete at the same time.
