Chapter One Introduction
In this chapter, there are three parts. The first part is about background of the study,the second one is the significance of the study, the third one is the purpose of the study, andthe last one is the layout of this study.
1.1 Background of the study
With the development of our society, English is widely used in normal life. “Englishis regarded as the global language has aroused more attention than everbefore(Nunan,1991). “For many students, reading is by far the most important of the fourskills in a second language, particularly in English as a second or foreignlanguage”(Carrel,1983). Reading is an effective way to obtain information and knowledgefrom the outside world, which is of great importance in English learning. In Englishlearning, reading not only provides opportunities to study linguistic knowledge, but alsooffers a tool students get to know the outside world. There is no doubt that reading is abasic and important skill for English learners. That is to say, the reading can improve thestudents’ ability of understanding and thinking and enlarge vocabulary and enrich theknowledge. Therefore, in junior high school English teaching, teachers always pay moreattention to the students’ reading training. But how can teachers improve students’ Englishreading scores? How can teachers help students to build the ability of English reading?These questions become more and more significant.The genre-based teaching approach is a teaching method that is based on the genreand genre analysis. The purpose of this method is the genre structures of discourse.Meanwhile, it aims at helping students get the knowledge of genre and attain informationthat based on generic structure and language features and then enhance students’ readingability. The genre-based teaching approach pays more attention on the structures of genreof the text , and studies the usage of the genre knowledge. The genre-based approachprovides a new method for teaching English reading, which pays attention the training ofgenre structure of the text.

1.2 Significance and purpose of the present study
On the basis of the previous researches on situational teaching method, the studyattempts to apply this method to English reading teaching for junior high students andimprove their learning. Therefore, the study is significant for the following reasons: firstly,genre-based approach mainly emphasizes genre and genre analysis which can help studentsand teachers to understand the discourse-building resources. As we all know,it is moreimportant to comprehend the construction of the text than the linguistic knowledge only inthe reading process. It can give them abundant knowledge. Secondly, it also can helpstudents to improve their understanding. Gene-based approach can assist students tounderstand the structure of a text. What’s more, it as well may promote students to buildbetter reading strategies. In traditional English reading class, the aim of a teacher is to trainstudents’ understanding of language points, not foster their reading strategies. However,genre-based approach asks that the teaching should cultivate their good reading habits andstrategies by doing activities which are based on discourse structure.This paper attempts to approve the availability and feasibility of genre-based approachin improving students’ English reading in junior high school.
