This bookobviously belongs to the category of social science texts. He Gangqiang(2009: 37) believesthat the language of social science works is always logical, and translators should payattention to the logic and readability of the target text in order to make it easy for readers to understand. Jin Fang(2003: 14-17) holds that social science works often aim to expoundarguments, so translators should focus on semantic equivalence and accurately convey theauthor's point of view; proper nouns and terms appear frequently in social science texts,and translators should choose the most popular translated names when translating thesenouns, and the translation of the same noun should be consistent throughout the wholework; in view of the social communication function of social science texts, translatorsshould focus on the readability of the target text in order to reduce target readers’ cognitiveburden.

Chapter Two Major Issues and Difficulties, Analysis of Causes

2.1 Major Issues and Difficulties

In the process of translation, the major issues and difficulties the author encounteredcan be classified into two types, which are proper nouns and terms, and long sentences.Next, the author will elaborate on these issues and difficulties with examples.

2.1.1 Proper Nouns and Terms

Society without God is a typical sociological work, which involves a large number ofpersonal names, geographical names, and terms in the fields of religion and sociology. Theaccuracy and unification of the translation of these proper nouns and terms are the key anddifficult points in the translation process.

The personal names appearing in this book can be classified into three types, whichare names of scholars, names of historical and religious figures and names of ordinaryinterviewees.

There are a lot of names of ordinary interviewees, and most of them, such as Dorthe,Laura, Anders, Johanne, Frank, Annelise, Marianne and so on, can be found in AComprehensive Dictionary of Names in Roman-Chinese . There is the nationalityinformation of these ordinary interviewees in the book, so for names with multiple versionsof Chinese translation, attention should be paid to choosing the version corresponding tothe nationalities. In addition, this project was jointly completed by three members, so thefocus is also on ensuring the consistency and accuracy of the translation of these names.While the names of a few ordinary interviewees cannot be found in A ComprehensiveDictionary of Names in Roman-Chinese, such as Jytte, Kjerstin and so on, which havebrought a lot of difficulties to the author.
