rocess which takes language as its target. It is congruent with the basic content of the learning process.
The sense of language is a process of psychological movement which occurs between linguistic subject and linguistic object. In other words it is a kind of mental connection of the subject and object. However, not all but only the effectively accepted language materials will become the object of the sense of language. In order to achieve this, the subject’s original schema structure of language sense plays a major role in monitoring. The schema structure of language sense is a great and accurate network which serves as the base for the emergence of language sense. It consists of numerous inter-related and interactive “knowledge unit”, and was composed of three different structure levels.
The first level is formal structure. Corresponding to the objective language form, it can be divided into phonetic structure and semantic structure. The former is composed of rhyme, tone, intonation and so on, which make it the most subtle and complex level. Any fluctuation of the emotion can be reflected through the rhyme, tone or intonation. This schema enables us to understand the overtone revealed by the material. For example, the sentence “John bought that new car yesterday”, by varying the ways of stressing and intonating, we will obtain at least three different meanings as below:
(1) … but I thought it was Kate who had bought that new car.
(2) … but how could he have afforded it? Where did he get the money?
(3) … but how incredible! I wouldn’t believe that.
The semantic structure refers to the word, word schema, and the syntagmatic relation of words. In terms of a certain word schema, the key point is its meaning. We know that sentence is composed of words and phrases; however, its meaning is not the combined meaning of all its components. So in order to understand a sentence, we must use the parsing schema.
The second level is situational structure. The manipulation of the generation and comprehension of language must be carried out under certain situation. The comprehension of the word meaning and sentence meaning should be based on the context. Only by relating to the context can we understand the meaning fully. For example, the sentence “It’s cold in this room”, it can be comprehended as a request of asking some body to close the window or turn off the air-conditioner. To understand this sentence, we should relate it to the context. The relating to context is a process of presenting compatible situational structures which are non-linguistic and cognitive.
The last level is intentional structure. Everyone has his own deep-rooted and irresistible life intentions, for example, hope to be admitted, accepted and respected. Correspondingly, each individual’s language sense schema has this structure, which makes his emotion responds automatically.
The above three structure levels basically determine a person’s competence of the sense of language. The process of the sense of language in fact is the process of language object effecting on the language subject and at the same time activating the different structure levels of the language sense schema. The subject then go through a series of mental movements, such as selecting, judgment, association, memorizing to modify, reproduce and reconstruct the language object and to internalize into his own schema structure. What act throughout the process are the two inner laws of the sense
