Chapter One Narrated Spaces

1.Physical Space

Physical space is defined as the perceived one and it refers to the space presentedat the material level:

It embodies a close association,within perceived space,between daily reality(daily routine)and urban reality(the routes and networks which link up theplaces set aside for work,‘private’life and leisure).(Lefebvre,1991:33)

Meanwhile,the spatial frames are categorized into three levels based on theirrelevance to the incidence of stories.First is the primary frame or setting which is thedirect background of the novels,second is the secondary frame,which has a relativelylower relevance to the incidence of stories than the settings.Third is the spatio-temporally distant frame which is partly accessible and beyond the boundary of thetime and space of the novel,so it belongs to another spatial continuum(Ronen,1986).Based on the above theory,in Enemies,a Love Story,the primary frame includesthree apartments in Brooklyn,Bronx,Manhattan of New York City where threewomen live,which is also the direct background where the story unfolds.Thesecondary frame contains the streets,residential areas,the seaside as well as otherpublic areas in New York City.Meanwhile,the spatio-temporally distant frame iscomprised of the Polish countryside and German Refugee Camp.

The depiction of the physical space is closely correlated with the Jewishsurvivors’contradictory traits.In terms of New York City,it is a space of oppositionthat confers the Jewish Holocaust survivors conflicting state of mind.For one thing,Manhattan,which is the epitome of a familiar Eastern European Jewish community,provides Tamara and other Jewish survivors a shelter,assuaging their pains fromHolocaust and ensuring their security.For another,the Bronx symbolizing moderncivilization unsettles Marsha’s mother,hindering her from reconciling with the pasttrauma,so she still dwells in the past.

2.Psychological Space:

It’s a conceptualized space,the space of scientists,planners,urbanists,technocraticsubdividers and social engineers,as of a certain type of artist with a scientific bent-all of whom identify what is lived and what is perceived with what isconceived.(Lefebvre,1991:33)

Based on the above arguments,psychological space refers to the space of notion andconception,so the psychological space of Jewish characters in Enemies，A Love Storycan be represented in the forms of the illusion of taking revenge on Nazis,the horriblereliving of Holocaust and the imagination of the Polish homeland.
