The following information concerns the preparation of your first assignment for the MA\MSc & MBA course. The aim is to produce a paper (informative and formal) by analysing the data provided using the statistic knowledge acquired so far in the Research Method Course. For the first assignment, you are invited to explore the following research question: “Does the topology of the banking structure of the EU countries differ after the introduction of the Euro?” I am briefly outlining below the basic requirements for the preparation of the report. For the rest I expect you to use your imagination and initiative to produce a high standard and quality report. 1) You are expected to undertake/write the research work necessary for the assignment on your own. Please read carefully “postgraduate Student Handbook” especially page 28 and 29 and text below: “Plagiarism is the most serious academic offence. … Copying, word for word, large chunks of writing from any source (e.g. paper, book, other students’ work) without acknowledgment of the author or owner, is plagiarism as it is wrongly claimed that ideas, models, new techniques are yours. … This also applies to a situation where you have lent someone your work to help them and they have substantially reproduced it without acknowledgement… Given the seriousness of the offence, plagiarism can lead to permanent exclusion from the university. … Depending on the extent of the offence, assignments, modules and ultimately your degree, may be failed. … You should be aware that cheating has resulted in disqualification from the degree. … For further details see the official University Policy on plagiarism. …” 2) You have to use the data set for banking firms (“eu15.xls”) available in the N drive/Blackboard. The data relates to various characteristics of the individual banks. 3) You are free to use any of the variables provided as long as your analysis is meaningful and tackles the research question. Please note that you should use the statistics you believe more appropriate for best describing the data set. 4) The length of the report including graphics and tables must not exceed 8 pages. 5) Needless to say that the report findings should be substantiated and explained with the appropriate published literature. 6) Please do not include raw data at the end of the paper since this would only waste paper.
