Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Research
Since the beginning of mankind, language has always developed with culture simultaneously. In the 1980s, Chinese foreign language teaching researchers began to realize that culture and language learning were inextricably linked. With the increasingly close cooperation and exchanges between China and the world, cross-cultural foreign language communication has become an emergent need in current world conditions, in regards to communication. English as a Lingua Franca has received unprecedented attention in China. According to Graddo’s Future of English, the current population of native English speakers is about 380 million. Speakers using English as a second language are equivalent to about 250 million. About 1.5 billion people has used English as a communication tool (Luo Changpei, 2019).
The phenomenon of cultural negligence in senior high school English teaching has gained more and more attention in the world. In 2017, Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools proposed eight levels of cultural awareness. The new curriculum standards require senior high school students to achieve an eight-level cultural goal, which is important to improve students’ sensitivity and discerning ability, and thus develop intercultural communication skills. Thus, cultural teaching must be strengthened while teaching English as a foreign language.
At present, words and grammar have been often emphasized, which has led to the phenomenon known as “dumb English” seen in today’s time. While focusing on language skills may help them achieve higher test scores in a short run, in the long term, the learners will gradually lose interest in learning English. This will lead to communication failure. To enable students to master English effectively, teachers must teach English culture while teaching the language itself.
