4.1 Results of the Study

Results of the research are presented mainly by numbers from three dimensions.

4.1.1 Results of the Analysis of Core Activities

Core activities includes“listening,”“speaking,”“reading”and“writing”.Questions ofNational Matriculation English Test papers are categorized into listening comprehension,reading comprehension,language knowledge(vocabulary and grammar)and writing.Paper tests cannot examine students’speaking,therefore,speaking activity is expelled inthis study.Questions of listening comprehension part belong to listening activity.Questions of language knowledge part are presented through discourse and text,thereforethey belong to reading activity together with questions of reading comprehension part.Writing part belongs to writing activity.Table 4-1 shows the score distribution of each testpaper.

Chapter 5 Conclusion

5.1 Major Findings

Based on the three-dimensional framework of English disciplinary competenceproposed by Wang[19],this study explored the characteristics of core activities,corecontents and core competences in National Matriculation English Test papers of Zhejiang,Beijing,Tianjin,Shandong,and Hainan in 2020.

Firstly,three core activities——listening,reading and writing,were included in thefive test papers chosen.These activities distributed unevenly in the five test papers.Although the uneven situation was similar in these test paper,reading activity accounts forthe largest share and the listening taking the least.

Secondly,taking the five National Matriculation English Test papers as a whole,allsix core contents were covered.However,not every thematic context appeared in each testpaper.The thematic context of“nature and environment”was applied in all five paperswhile the thematic context of“health and safety”and“literature and art”were not coveredby all the National Matriculation English Test papers.What’s more,the six contents wereunevenly distributed in each test paper.By analyzing the types of questions in the fiveNational Matriculation English Test papers,it can be concluded the thematic context of“life and emotion”took the largest proportion among the six.
