outside are higher in fat and lower in micronutrients (Cummins & Macintyre, 1999, p.546). Restaurants charge slightly more than a few cents for larger-size orders of junk food such as soft drinks, popcorn, and French fries, and it is found that the past few decades have witnessed the standard serving sizes of the junk foods increased (Young & Nestle, 1995,p.150) However, Tillotson (2002) argues that the obsession with junk food is not generated by food industry and that it depends on individuals to solve the problem. Actually, food choice is not entirely free, but constricted by many factors, among which, the poverty stands out. Many studies (Thompson et al, 2004) have reveled that area deprivation is positively related to the provision of fast-food outlets. For example, Cummins et al. (2005,p.308-310) found compared to the least deprived census output areas, the per capita outlet provision was four times higher in the most deprived census output areas.

Third, food industry plays a trick on nutritional labels. When food is labelled, the inconsistency about the format or size of labeling makes it difficult for consumers to interpret or even to see. Besides, the information about the nutritional ingredients of food served in restaurants or take-aways are tricky. According to Michael F. Jacobson and Bruce Silverglade (2009, p.13), food label can trip up consumers. For instance, the label, ‘high in fiber’, counts polydextrose, maltodextrin, or similar isolated fibers as equal to the intact, natural fiber in whole grains, beans, or vegetables; the label ‘made with real coffee’ fails to tell consumers how much caffeine is in a serving; the label, ‘supports immunity’, is deceptive and shouldn’t be allowed simply because the food contains a vitamin or two. Nevertheless, some argue that it is the government’s failure to regulate the nutrition label to blame. It is unfair for governments. An overview of what governments have done reveals that government is making effort. For instance, based on the hypothesis that consumers will make better food choices when they are informed of accurate and truthful information about food, Nutrition Labeling and Education Act came into being in 1990, which requires nutrition labels on packaged food. Besides, recent years have witnessed menu labeling legislation for the purpose that consumers can have access to calorie information on restaurant menus. (Roberto, et al, 2009,p.546-551) However, the food industry tries every means to weaken legislation. A case in point is the ‘Smart Choices’---- a big green check mark on certain products, indicating the products meet ‘science-based nutrition criteria’. Many well-renowned companies participate in the program including PepsiCo, General Mills, Kraft and Wal-Mart. It is actually a nutrition standard that set by the food industry (Glover, 2009).  Under such circumstance, consumers tend to free themselves from trouble of reading ingredient lists as ‘science’ has secured the quality of products.

Responsibility for management and prevention of obesity lies with food industry: first, food industry bombards the consumers with different kinds of inducing sales promotion; second, food industry changes people’s life style by providing them opportunity to eat outside; third, food industry fails to use appropriate nutrition labels. To sum up, food industry has the responsibility to war against the epidemic of obesity.
