　　话语标记是一种通用语言现象,可以证明世界上最深的语言。(顺应性,1999:17)它的重要作用的口头和书面英语的研究现状既有理论又有实践意义Discourse marker is a universal linguistic phenomenon that can be justified inmost languages in the world. (Verschueren,1999:17) It's important role in oral andwritten English indentifies the present research with both theoretical and practicalsignificance.Theoretically, the present study accounts for how discourse markers are adoptedin Chinese English users, and how their adoption are different from that of nativeusers, and it may thus shed light on the development of discourse or conversationanalysis (Crystal, 1985: 75).By doing this the study could keep in pace with thedevelopment of new approaches for the analysis of discourse (e.g.corpuslinguistics)and pragmatics (e.g.Language Adaptation Theory)．By integrating previousstudy products, this thesis works under the framework of Verschueren's linguisticadaptation theory with the assistance of corpus.Practically, the present study has significance in two aspects. On one hand, theproper use and interpretation contributes a large part of pragmatic or communicativecompetence. Therefore, a better understanding and acquirement of them could help toguarantee more effective expressions both in oral and written work. On the other hand,the corpus-based research provides us with statistics as well as examples on how thediscourse markers are applied in second language learners and native speakers .So itwill give a clearer guide on how to teach and learn English discourse markers in asimon-pure way.The main aim of this thesis is to provide a systematic and detailed analysis of thefunctions of English discourse markers in literary language and vernacular languagefrom the perspective of Verschueren's linguistic adaptation theory.
