2.2 Previous Studies on Modality in China
At the beginning of Chinese grammar, grammarians do not pay special attention tomodality, their research is limited to the main expression of modal meaning. With thedevelopment of domestic grammar and the influence of foreign research on modality, manyscholars at home gradually become interested in modality.Tsang (1981) points out that although modality in Chinese is not so obvious as that inEnglish, it still remains. So he systematically studies the modality in modern Chinese. Hethinks that the modal category is a semantic category, which has its own semantic andsyntactic features that rely on language (Tsang, 1981).Qiu Shude (1995) studies modal verbs from pragmatic perspective. He makes acomparision on modality system between Chinese and English. And he discusses modalmeanings from three opposite aspects: intrinsic modality vs. extrinsic modality, subjectivitymodality vs. objectivity modality and hypothetical meaning vs. factual one. In his paper, healso discusses pragmatic features of modality in discourse (Qiu Shude, 1995: 50-51).Zhang Zhenbang (1997) divides the auxiliaries into three subclasses in his book NewEnglish Grammar. They are the primary auxiliaries (be, have, do), the modal auxiliaries (themodal verbs for shall, can, may, will, must, etc.), the semi-auxiliaries (dare, need, ought to,used to) (Zhang Zhenbang, 1997:410).

Chapter Five Results and Discussion
In this chapter, the quantitative method will be used to calculate the frequency of eachmodal verb in introduction sections of Education and Engineering academic discourse withthe help of Antconc 3.4.3, and the distribution of modal values will be also presented in thispart. Then the qualitative description about how the nine modal verbs in introduction sectionsof academic discourse reflect contextual adaptability will be described, after that, theadaptation features of modal values in contextual adaptability in introduction sections ofEducation and Engineering articles will be presented in order to find their similarities anddifferences. And how modal values are related to contextual adaptability will also beinvestigated in this part.
