e kinds of modal values inintroduction sections of Education and Engineering articles will be presented in this part.The paper mainly studies modal verbs in introduction sections of Education andEngineering articles, which includes must, will, would, shall, should, can, could, may andmight. In this part, it will firstly find which modal verbs are obtained in the corpora, and theoccurrence and frequency of each modal verb in the corpora will be presented as a whole.Then the occurrence and frequency of each modal verb in introduction sections of Educationand Engineering articles will be presented respectively in order to find their similarities anddifferences.With the help of Antconc 3.4.3, the occurrence and percentage of each modal verb in the120 articles can be easily obtained. And the following are the frequencies of modal verbs inRA Introductions.By retrieving the corpora, it can be found that all the nine modal verbs appear in the 120articles. From Table 5.1, we can clearly see that the occurrences of the nine modal verbs are577 in total, and each modal verb appears disproportionately in the corpora. Can takes up thelargest proportion with 201 times, accounting for 34.84%, one third of the total, which ismuch more than the others. Then followed by may, which appears 89 times with the ratio of15.43%. And will occupies the third place, it appears 72 times with the ratio of 12.48%. It isnoticeable that should, would, could, might and must appear rather less than the top three,such as might occurs 22 times with 3.81% and must appears 34 times with 5.89%. Among thenine modal verbs, shall are the least one, it only appears once, accounting for 0.17%.

Conclusion
The paper has investigated modal verbs in introduction sections of Education andEngineering articles based on self-built corpora. And Verschueren’s adaptation theory is usedto explain the distribution features of modal verbs and modal values in introduction sections.This chapter mainly summarizes the main findings of this study, offers the implications anddiscusses its limitations and also gives some suggestions for further study.In this study, quantitative approach is used to find the distribution features of modalverbs and modal values in introduction sections of Education and Engineering researcharticles, and then qualitative method is used to analyze the features from the perspective ofadaptation theory. Some major findings are as follows.First, it is generally believed that modal verbs in Education articles should be much morethan those in Engineering, for authors of Education articles are likely to express theirsubjective opinions while authors of Engineering articles pay more attention to the objectivefacts. However, through the findings, it can be seen that the number of modal verbs inEducation (291) is almost the same with that in Engineering (286) in the corpora. Moreover,in introduction sections of both Education and Engineering articles, low value modals accountfor the largest, then followed by
Median ones, and high value modal takes up the least. But inEngineering, low value modals account for 71.68% while in Education it is 53.60%; And inEducation, both median value modals and high value modal are all higher than those inEngineering. Median ones account for 38.80% in Education and 24.12% in Engineering. Highvalue modal accounts for 7.60% in Education and 4.20% in Engineering.Second, in research articles, the selection of
