The object of this study is the inaugural speeches delivered by American presidents, ranging from Jimmy Carter to Barack Hussein Obama, 10 in total. Inaugural speeches are one of the most typical political addresses. In the addresses, they try to convince the public to understand and support their political views. To achieve this goal, they must put up some solutions to some tough problems, which are among the top concerns of the public. And instead of avoiding the sensitive topics, it is wise enough to express their attitudes towards them. So political euphemisms are needed to denote the sensitive issues. There are 20501 words altogether in these 10 addresses. And based on the above working definition of political euphemisms, there are 379 political euphemisms, including word groups and sentences. As Presidents of the United States, they are not only heads of states, or the ruling party leaders. They have other 4 identities: First, supreme lawmakers: have vetoes towards Congress’s resolutions; Second, the executive heads of the government; Third, the head of the defense and foreign policies: be endowed rights by the constitution to deal with foreign affairs. Forth, the winners in the partisan struggles, the Democratic Party vs. the Republican Party. So, based on the identities of Presidents, their inaugural speeches must balance the interests of all parties.
