4.1 Analysis of Comparable Corpus

Two major research questions are answered in this section: 1. Are there anystatisticaldifferencesbetweenChineseandEnglishinpunctuationfeatures?Ifthereare,what are they? 2.Do punctuation features in translated Chinese conform to or differfrom those in original Chinese? If they are different, what are the differences? Thesection presents the results and discussion from the analysis of punctuation frequencyand distribution features of punctuation between original Chinese (LCMC) and originalEnglish (FLOB), and the results show that compared to original Chinese, the frequencyof sentence separator is much lower and the frequency of sentence terminator is muchhigher in original English. And among the separator and terminator, the comma andperiodhaveshownthebiggestdifferencebetweenoriginalChineseandoriginalEnglish.The difference in S/T value suggests that there is an average of 0.98 sentence separatorin every original English sentence while 2.22 sentence separators in every originalChinese sentence on average, which in another way implies the difference of segmentarrangement and collocation within the sentence: there are more sentence segments inChinese sentences and fewer clauses/phrases in English sentences.

5.1 Major findings

The hypothesis that “in E-C translation, the features of punctuation marks in targettexts are generally influenced by the original English and tends to be different from thatin theoriginal Chinese”is validatedby using three comparable corpora and quantitativeanalysis to compare the features of punctuation marks. By comparing the source textsand target texts, it is found that different punctuation marks and different translationsare affected differently. There is a drastic increase of separators, especially commas, inallfourtranslations.DuringtheE-Ctranslationprocess,translatorsusuallyaddcommasor other sentence separators to break the clause complex in English source texts intoseveral sentence segments so that the sentence in translated Chinese becomes more likea run-on sentence.

The major findings of the study could be concluded in four parts and each partresponds to one of the four research questions.

Question 1. Are there any statistical differences between Chinese and English inpunctuation features? If there are, what are they?

It is found that there is a significant difference between original English andoriginal Chinese in terms of features of punctuation marks: original English tends touse sentence terminators more often and use sentence separators less frequentlycompared to original Chinese.
