ons.By providing typical examples in comparison,the thesis hopes to explorethe cognitive patterns of different cultures and the different narrative strategies used inthe two translated versions.

In a word,cognitive narratology,a branch of post-classical narratology,providesa valuable tool for literary studies.To some extent,this study verifies the applicabilityof cognitive narratology in the field of translation and leads to further understandingof cognitive narratology.It also provides a new perspective to studying the translationof Oscar Wilde’s works,especially The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies on Chinese Translations of Wilde’s Works

Wilde was one of the first foreign writers to be introduced to the Chinese peopleduring the nascent period of new Chinese literature.After being introduced to China in1909,Wilde’s works,through the vigorous promotion of Chen Duxiu and the translationand introduction of new literary writers,gradually set off a wave of translation in theChinese literary community after the May Fourth Movement.During this period,Wilde’sdramas,poems,fairy tales,etc.,were translated into Chinese(Yuan Limei,2014).Betweenthe late 1940s and the 1980s,the“Wilde Mania”cooled off significantly due to the growingurgency of the national and state crisis.The study of Wilde in China basically stopped.After a long period of silence,Wilde finally re-entered the Chinese market in the mid-1980s.From then until today,domestic retranslations of Wilde’s works have flourished.Thenumber of translations of Wilde’s fiction,poems,proses and dramas is considerable.Inaddition,scholars have written papers to discuss and analyze in-depth the Chinesetranslations of Wilde’s works from different theoretical perspectives.Wilde’s works havebeen more fully translated and interpreted In this process.In the following,the presentauthor divides Wilde’s works into three major categories:poems and proses,dramas as wellas fiction,and sorts out the relevant Chinese translation studies of Wilde’s works in eachcategory.

2.2 Previous Studies on the Translation of The Picture of Dorian Gray

Up to now,there have been about twenty Chinese translations of The Picture ofDorian Gray,and the perspectives of research on the translation of this novel have beendiverse.Firstly,some scholars compare its different translations in terms of the socialenvironment and the subjective motivation of the translators.Jiang Xiaowen(2010)chooses Huang Yuanshen’s and Rong Rude’s translations to explain the influence ofcultural changes on the translation of the novel,thus revealing that the translation isnecessarily closely related to the social environment.In addition to the body of the text,thepreface and footnotes are also noteworthy parts of the translation.Through the analysis ofthe footnotes of the two translations,Jiang(2008)compares the two translators’differentchoices of annotation methods,revealing their different cultural contexts.Li Yang(2007)compares several translated versions of The Picture of Dorian Gray,and finds that in thetranslation process,creative treason is often required in order to make the novelunderstandable to the reader and achieve the real communication purpose.
