4.1 Polychrony

4.1.1 Classification

Polychrony is common in retrospective narrative and stream-of-consciousnessnarrative(Shang Guanghui,2019).Retrospective narrative generally refers to anarrative type in which the protagonist recalls a past scene from the current narrativecontext,usually involving at least two shifts of deictic centers.The first is a shift fromthe real world to mental models,and the second is a shift from one frame story toanother(Herman,2002:224).The author uses a large number of textual cues or deicticterms to realize the spatial transformation of the story,allowing the narrator toreconstruct past experiences through current narrative activities.This results in thestory with dual temporal characteristics,showing the feature of polychrony.

The narrative of stream-of-consciousness is also polychronic.Among modern western novels,stream-of-consciousness novel was popular in Britain,America andFrance from the 1920s to the 1940s and influenced the new novels of France andAmerica.Stream-of-consciousness novelists advocate that authors should avoiddirectly commenting or preaching and let characters’consciousness unfoldautomatically.They emphasize the use of inner monologue,free association andvarious symbolic devices to show the flow of the characters’consciousness in arealistic way(Li Weiping,1996:4-7).In the narrative of stream-of-consciousness,thenarrator’s consciousness constantly flows in different temporal latitudes.The past,present,and future are integrated,thus also showing the feature of polychrony.

5.1 Major Findings

This study uses David Herman’s cognitive narratology theory to compare ThePicture of Dorian Gray and its two Chinese translations in terms of polychrony andhypothetical focalization.Through comparative and descriptive analysis,the presentauthor finds that Rong Rude’s translation and Huang Yuanshen’s translation usedifferent methods in terms of narrative time and focalization,thus achieving differentnarrative effects.
