d is absurd and life is painful is one of the basic principles of Sartre‟s existentialism. It is believed that in this subjective society, there must be conflicts, struggles and cruelty between people, full of ugliness and crimes, and everything is absurd. A man is doomed to experience pains in this absurd and cold situation. The world can only give people endless anguish, disappointment, pessimism and negativity, and life is painful. However, the absurdity of the world ends with death (Lu Yang, 2006)144.

Chapter 5  Death Writing After Wars

5.1  The Authentic Existence =

From the transcended idea of death in mythological wars to the absurd character of death in authentic wars, Yeats described others‟ deaths in his war poems. However, in the end of his life, except continuing to reflect on war and death, he also turned to his own death and found the truth of death. Yeats‟s attitude toward death is a dynamic process. He realized the fragility of his life and the death approaching to him, so he extremely worried about this situation that he was in. This situation also enabled him to realize that people should face and value their life and death through “In Memory of Major Robert Gregory” and feel the authentic existence through “The Man and the Echo”, “Under Ben Bulben”.

On the one hand, Yeats tended to recall his friends of his later years to try to understand the meaning of death. As mentioned above, Major Robert Gregory, son of Yeats‟s great friend Lady Gregory, shot by an Italian airman mistakenly during the WWI. He played an important role in Yeats‟s whole life in that Yeats wrote four poems to commemorate him after his death. Yeats‟s opinions on the death of Major Robert Gregory varied from the changes of Yeats‟s age.

Chapter 6  Conclusion

Yeats‟s understanding of the human world has much in common with existentialism, especially his descriptions of death. Yeats expresses certain ideas that echo some famous existential concepts about death in his war poems. Based on Jaspers, Sartre and Heidegger‟s existential concepts about death, this thesis explores Yeats‟s descriptions of death in mythological wars, in real wars and his understanding of death after a series of wars. Yeats‟s view of death is dynamic.
