Awareness encompasses people’s knowledge and perception of the environmentaround them and also themselves.“Awareness,at any time,can only be existence thathas been consciously aware of;the existence of humans is their actual life progress”(Chen Xueming 2012).And as the conceptual reflection of current existence,theemergence of ecological consciousness has its inevitability,behind which is people’sreexamination of the ecological environment.Ever since the Industrial Revolution,theprogress of science and technology has endowed human beings with the power totransform the nature,which has brought about a profound change in the relationshipbetween man and nature:people who used to be in awe of the nature are now the onein charge,accompanied by the continuous enhancement of man’s subjectconsciousness.The ruthless plundering of natural resources and the relentlessdestruction of the natural environment that result from the subject-object dichotomyof man and nature have made nature sound the alarm:faced with the global ecologicalenvironment crisis,mankind starts to rethink the relationship between man and nature.As claimed by Yu Bing and Wang Hongxin(2016:112),“It(ecological awareness)comes from people’s reflection on the serious and adverse consequences of humanactivities violating ecological laws in the past,from the awakening of the existingserious ecological crisis and its root causes,from the concern for human sustainabledevelopment and the perception of the survival and development of futuregenerations”.Therefore,ecological awareness is not only a general reflection of thecurrent state of existence,but also a profound reflection on the existing ecologicalproblems.

1.2 Research Objectives

As mentioned by Huang Guowen and Chen Yang(2016:55),“It is argued that byanalyzing the stories we live by within the ecological framework of discourse analysis,one can uncover the underlying meanings and hidden ideology in the discourseconstructed by the speaker,either intentionally or unintentionally”.To put it in thisway,by analyzing the changes of the language used in animal definition,we intend to reveal the development of the attitude towards animals and the rethink of therelationship between man and animals,held by dictionary editors under the influenceof social common sense.

To be more specific,the author aims to study the changes of the language used toexplain animal and animal-related entries in The Modern Chinese Dictionary(MCD)of all its seven editions to investigate the development of ecological consciousness.Specially,this thesis is expected to answer the following questions:

(1)What are the changes of animal and animal-related entries and the languagein their definitions in The Modern Chinese Dictionary from the first to the seventhedition?

(2)How do the changes of entries and their definitions reflect the developmentof people’s ecological consciousness?
