The Chinese Word“li(礼)”has many different versions when translated into English,like“ritual”,“ceremony”,“propriety”,“etiquette”,and so on.The thesis follows the versionof“ritual”according to Robert Cummings Neville’s book The Good Is One,ItsManifestations Many(2016).Modern Chinese people are familiar with the terms Confucianritual thought and pragmatism,both of which play an important role in traditional Chineseculture and modern Philosophy.Pragmatism is a major school of thought in twentieth-centuryWestern philosophy.It began in the United States around 1870s.Its first generation was led bythe classical pragmatist Charles Sanders Peirce(1839-1914),who defined and defended theviewpoint,and his close friend and colleague William James(1842-1910),who developed andskillfully popularized it.By bridging the two seemingly unrelated terms pragmatism andConfucian ritualism,Robert Cummings Neville inherited Peirce’s ideas and offered a newperspective on Confucianism.

For over two thousand years,Confucian culture has cultivated a spirit of ritual(li/礼),which originated from sacrificial ceremony,and gradually became propriety of socialinteraction independently from religious practices.Confucian ritual is a core component ofConfucianism,and China is known as a nation of etiquette,in which Confucian ritual plays acrucial role.At the level of social theory,it is expressed as“the laws and regulations areincluded in the ceremony,and polish is too included in the ceremony(制度在礼,文为在礼)”(trans.Luo 2017:268).At the level of personal temperament,it emphasizes humility andresignation,and reflects a humanistic and rational spirit through the construction of variousrules and regulations and the restraint of social norms.

1.2 Introduction to Robert Cummings Neville

Robert Cummings Neville(1939-,南乐山)is a professor of Philosophy,Religion,andTheology and Dean Emeritus of the School of Theology at Boston University.He is arepresentative of Boston Confucianism and has been called“one of the most significantphilosophers and theologians of our time”(Chapman&Frankenberry 1999:vii).Neville has done a lot of works in philosophical and theological studies including his metaphysical theoryof being,his comparative theology,doctrine of creation.And he is also a proponent ofConfucianism,together with several scholars from the Boston area of the United States,especially including Tu Weiming of Harvard University.Neville encourages the developmentof what has come to be called“Boston Confucianism.”As its name suggests,BostonConfucianism is a“non-East Asian”expression of the Confucian tradition,dedicated toseeking the possibility of dialogue between Confucianism and Western philosophy and tryingto advance Confucianism into a world philosophy that encompasses both Eastern and Westernthought.Neville’s field of study and academic background shows that he is an internationallyrenowned philosopher who is deeply imbued with the Western philosophical tradition and hasmade great achievements in the fields of theology,ethics,religion,Greek philosophy,etc.Hisstudy of Confucianism is conducted from the academic standpoint and research paradigm ofWestern philosophy.T论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
