Chapter Two Klara as an Unnatural Artificial Friend
2.1 An Unnatural Narrator
Many “post-anthropomorphic narrators” (Richardson 1) come to the fore in narrative literature, and “by moving beyond merely human narrators, texts begin to tamper with or destroy outright the ‘mimetic contract’” (Richardson 1). Alber argues that unnatural narratives are sometimes narrated by “other entities that, in the world of everyday experience, do not tell stories” (71), such as nonhuman narrators. That is to say, both Richardson and Alber keep a watchful eye on the odd, strange, and impossible speakers in narrative works. The unnatural and impossible qualities in some narratives contrast with cognitive frames and scripts related to natural laws, logical principles, and standard limitations of human knowledge and abilities in the natural and real world.
Alber proposes nine reading strategies that might be used to understand unnatural narratives, two of which are “the blending of frames” (48) and “generification” (49). In unnatural narratives, the knowledge of the known empirical world may not be applicable. However, readers can associate unnatural narrative texts with reality and then blend a new frame with the help of the cognitive framework of the real world. On this occasion, the unnatural are transformed into a fundamentally cognitive category that evokes “generic conventions from literary history” (Alber 49), so as to interpret the unnaturalness of unnatural narration. Aided by these two reading strategies, a more detailed analysis of the artificial intelligence robot Klara being a narrator will be represented.
2.2 An Unnatural Character
A Narrative contains both narration and description. That is to say, a narrative is about a series of events that take place in a particular story world, and the subjects involved in the story constitute the world of characters in the fictional world. In Klara and the Sun, as an unnatural narrator mentioned above, girl AF Klara states the events she has experienced: Klara knows the vast majority of the characters in the story, and it is what they do that Klara actually narrates; what is essential is that Klara is involved in most of the events that she narrates. That is to say, Klara is a character in the story and plays a vital role in the events she tells while acting as a narrator.
Besides, Klara and the Sun is a science fiction “typically use[s] technological innovations to infuse inanimate machines with human minds” (Alber 125). As a nonhuman artificial intelligence, Klara has some human-like qualities with an optimistic attitude and keen observation and especially possesses emotional perceptions. However, there is still an essential difference between human beings and fictional characters, even if the characters in literary works are incredibly similar to human beings. Klara is an important participant, but she is only a product of science and technology in a fictional work, not a real human being, one of the “various impossible characters in science fiction (which have to do with speculations about what might happen 本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
