Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Research on Attitudinal Resources

Attitude system is the core subsystem of Appraisal Theory,which is an effectivetool to explore attitudinal resources.Domestic and foreign scholars have done someresearch on attitudinal resources.The following sections will present it.

2.1.1 The Definition of Attitudinal Resources

Martin(2000)formally puts forward Appraisal Theory in his paper BeyondExchange:APPRAISAL System in English,of which the attitude system is a coresubsystem.The attitude system is an effective tool to explore attitudes conveyed in thelanguage.Attitudinal resources are involved in the attitude system.Attitude is concernedwith our feelings,including emotional reactions,judgement of behavior and evaluationof things(Martin&White,2005).Attitude system includes three subcategories:affect,judgment and appreciation.

Hu(2009)points out that Appraisal Theory focuses on the lexical level andexpresses the speaker’s ideology towards language objects through evaluative lexis.Asits core component,the attitude system focuses on the attitudinal meaning expressed atthe lexical level.Therefore,attitudinal resources are defined as the attitudinal meaningsreflected in the evaluative lexis,because the selection of evaluation lexis usually reflectsthe speaker’s attitudes towards the language objects.Affect resources stress emotionalmeanings reflected by evaluative lexis.Judgement resources emphasize judgement meanings reflected by evaluative lexis.Appreciation resources stress appreciationmeanings reflected by evaluative lexis.

2.2 Research on Positive Discourse Analysis

This section reviews theoretical and applied research on PDA.Besides,positivediscourse analysis of news are also reviewed.

2.2.1 Theoretical Research on Positive Discourse Analysis
