Chapter 6 Conclusion

As one of the leading American postmodern writers,Coover has an unassailable position.His novels still have great influence on today's literary works.Deeply influenced bypostmodern trend,he boldly innovated writing techniques.The Babysitter is one of themasterpieces of his postmodern novels,which embodies the essential characteristic ofpostmodernism,namely indeterminacy.

Based on the theory of indeterminacy pointed out by contemporary theorist，Ihab Hassan,that is,indeterminacy is the most fundamental characteristic of postmodernism.Theindeterminacy of postmodern literature can be reflected in the indeterminacy of characters,language,plots and themes.Therefore,based on the indeterminacy theory of postmodernism,this dissertation mainly attempts to make a detailed analysis of the indeterminatecharacteristics presented in Coover's novel from the perspectives of the characters,language,plots and themes of the novel,and finally find the determinacy of the postmodern societyfrom indeterminacy.

Specially,this dissertation mainly consists of the following parts:

The first chapter is the introduction.First of all,the author Robert Coover and his workThe Babysitter are briefly introduced,and the research results of scholars at home and abroadon the novel are expounded.Based on the current status of the research,the significance ofthis dissertation is further presented.

The second chapter is the theoretical foundation.It introduces the concept and evolvingof postmodern indeterminacy theory,the manifestations of indeterminacy,that is,theindeterminacy of characters,language,plots and themes.
