stored. It is the same case with compounds.

Commonly speaking, even transparent items may not be easing primed. It is because the meaning of compound may renew of the constituents of it.

For the topic of production, psycholinguists believe that it is simpler and more automatic for the production of new inflectional forms than the derivative forms. Individual language speakers are eager to learn and produce words than later. At the early stage, new words are required while later they are generalized. Speakers are unwilling to produce new words since they basically grasp the full system of the native language. Thus, is every kind of word form produced automatically or not? ' “ Making up a new word, at least at the derivational end of any inflectional /derivational cline, is a conscious procedure, and one which is carried out by people with prestige in the community on special occasions, not as a regular thing'(Bauer, 2001, p.115). It is hard for every speaker to process words automatically because the language ability of everyone is different, and not all derivatives or inflections are easy to process. Some of them are easy to process and some can process automatically. The reason for this difference may be due to two aspects. Derivations and inflections are formed and utilized in different ways. Some of the derivatives are more productive than others. For compounding, it cannot be produced automatically. If it is automatic productive, it should be available for every speaker without the limitation of other factors. If it is not, it explains why speakers prefer to store spate lexemes to compounds as a whole.

To sum up, morphological process is stored in the mind as well as other word elements do. All forms are listed separately. However, for some especially frequent forms, they are stored as a whole. Inflections are stored and used at an early stage of the speaker. Derivations are hard to acquire and compounds seen to be limited by the ability of the speaker.

This chapter gives an overview of the research on productivity at domestic and overseas. They focus on a different part. The domestic research is in a preliminary stage while overseas research mainly concerns the qualitative aspects and quantitative parts. The next chapter will give a brief introduction on the basic notions of productivity.

CHAPTER THREE THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

This chapter will introduce the different ways of measuring productivity and the basic terms of morphology and productivity. We will consider the broad problem of this paper that: 'how productivity is measured'. Before the probabilistic model was supplied, which adopted in this thesis, what are the other approaches? The shortcomings and advantages of every method will be introduced. Finally, we will come to a proper way of testing productivity.

3.1 How to define productivity

As a crucial part of morphology in linguistic, productivity plays a role on affecting morphological process. How to define productivity is a basic question about this thesis. The term productivity is primarily used by Dietz. 'Most formative elements, and the most i论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
