摘要:张爱玲在文学方面由于其优良的和独特的创作,在文学领域享有很高的声誉。人们很重视她的创作,但文学翻译中忽视了她的天赋和成就,而她自作自译的作品少之又少。事实上,一个作家兼翻译有着更多的优势与其他译者相比,保持连贯性的原始和写作风格的统一,并自译现象应给予更多的关注。

  Introduction引言

自译,作为一种特殊的翻译现象,在中国翻译史上一个很长的时间内已被忽视和排斥。有的学者认为,自我翻译不同于“真实”的翻译因为忠诚的问题,为作家兼翻译将变成文字,争议的翻译这样做可能会犹豫(科勒,1992:197)。Self-translation, as a special translation phenomenon, has been ignored andmarginalized for a long time in the history of translation. To some scholars,self-translation is different from the “true translation” because of the issue offaithfulness, as the writer-cum-translator will introduce changes into the text where acontroversial translator might hesitate to do so (Koller, 1992:197). https://www.51lunwen.org/literaturearts/  Luckily enough, the cultural turn in the 1980s has marked a significant shift in translation studies. Withan aim to reexamine translation, scholars begin to explore, analyze and research allkinds of phenomena in the background of the large socio-cultural context.Recent studies on self-translations are centered upon the Medieval Latin poetry, early Gaelic poetry and works of the modern and postmodern writers, like Nabokov,Beckett and Tagore in the Western world. In China, self-translation practices havebeen done mainly by those writers with excellent bilingual competence, and LinYutang, Eileen Chang, Bian Zhilin, Bai Xianyong and Xiao Qian are the mostoutstanding ones, among which Eileen Chang made no small stirs in the Chineseliterary circle as a gifted writer, but very few scholars have touched upon her literarytranslation, especially her self-translation works. Jinsuoji, highly praised by Fu Lei as“one of the most beautiful results in the literary world” and most representative ofEileen’s novel writing, is carefully chosen as the subject of the present study.Although several English versions of Jinsuoji were produced by Eileen Chang, thispaper is focused on The Golden Cangue, which could be seen as a technically directtranslation from Jisuoji under the requirement of C.T.Hsia, who included this versioninto his The History of Modern Chinese Fiction.Andre Lefevere’s rewriting theory has been applied to describe and explain manytranslation phenomena. Little research has been done on self-translation from theperspective of rewriting theory. In the present thesis, the rewriting theory is employedto explain how ideology, poetics and patronage affect Eileen Chang’s practice ofself-translating Jinsuoji. In translating one’s own works, the writer-cum-translatordoes have more freedom than translators who translate other’s works, but he can nottotally free himself from the cultural bondage of the target language. Through the casestudy of Jinsuoji and the self-translated version, this thesis tries to give a newperspective for self-translation studies. As Eileen Chang is a well-renownedwriter-cum-translator, and Jinsuoji a highly-complemented novelette in the literati, some research on The Golden Cangue will be very representative of the phenomenonof self-translating. By applying the rewriting theory to the process of self-translating,the author of the thesis probes into various aspects that affect a self-translator in hischoice of translating strategies, thus providing some new insight into self-translationstudies from the cultural context. Besides, the present research could also be seen as asupplement for studies on Eileen Chang’s translations, which seems to be far less thanthose on her literary writings. In this thesis, the author adopts the western translation theorist Andre Lefevere’stheory to study Eileen Chang’s translation activities with the case study of The GoldenCangue.
