Can networking allow China's golf clubs to become world leaders?
ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the traditional Chinese cultural and social personal relationship -'Guanxi' networking to analyze its embedded power that accelerates the growth of China's golf industry and eventually allowed 'Mission Hills Golf Club', to become a world leader1 . To answer the research question, I first theorize the guanxi framework and its related properties. Then, I categorize my analysis into two different perspectives: The Investor Perspective and The Golf Club Perspective. From the investors' perspective, the empirical evidence proves that overseas investors see guanxi network as a crucial element when doing business in China; joining a golf club provides them with various benefits, which is the driving force that nurtures the rapid growth of China's golf industry. However, from the golf club perspective, evidences support that Mission Hills Golf Clubs has utilized, diversified and maximized its multi-level guanxi network, which is crucial for its sales growth. Then, its guanxi network with top government officials is fundamental for its golf clubs development. Finally, I document that guanxi alone is a necessary yet insufficient condition for Mission Hills Golf Club to become a world leader. A number of traditional Marketing mix, such as pricing, facilities, advertising are also found to be significant in order to achieve such an unbelievable market performance.
