Chapter II Literature Review
This chapter will introduce the relevant researches abroad and what researchesthe researchers have made in China about the newspaper reading.
2.1 Relevant researches abroad
Many researchers from different countries who speak English as their secondlanguage have made lots of contribution to the English newspaper reading study.English newspapers have been used as one of the curriculum resources in primaryschools, secondary schools and universities in the United Kingdom, the United Statesand other English-speaking countries, where quantities of linguists have maderesearches on applying English newspapers in English teaching. Daniel Dropko,Professor in University of Florida in the United States, listed three major advantagesof adopting English newspaper as one of the English teaching materials in the articleReading Newspaper to Learn English, they are being cheap, being easily accessibleand language’s being idiomatic (Dropko, 1986). Kenji Kitao who is a professor inJapan has been teaching the students the effective methods to read Englishnewspapers for about thirty years. Dycus also designed some classroom readingactivities according to newspaper articles (1996). Kevin Reilly claims that using ofthe newspaper in the classroom can go back to the 1980s, and Educators’ Associationplays an essential role in advocating this practice for many years. Besides, under theinfluence of the program of applying newspaper reading in education, a lot ofresearchers made empirical studies in the 1980s. The results of all these studies arepositive. According to Collins (1987), the program now owes 700 newspapersmemberships in North America and at least 52 other countries all over the world alsouse this program of applying newspaper reading in education. The NewspaperAssociation of America Foundation makes a survey which indicates that newspapersare used as one of the reading materials in English class at about 67000 schools.
