Chapter 4 Results and Discussion


4.1 Pilot study
In this section, a pilot study will be made first for the reason that it is a big problemin the field of language attrition to decide whether the failure of participants in the test isregarded as a result of attrition or learning imperfectly. If we conducted a longitudinalstudy, it would be relatively easy to measure the proficiency level prior to attrition,however, a pilot study will often be used in a sectional paradigm, in which theparticipants' PLPAs can be roughly presupposed by consulting those of the equivalentparticipants in the pilot study. Hansen (1999) once conducted a research based on thismethod,which will be used in the present study.In the pilot study,I have chosen 33 junior college students in Shaanxi normaluniversity as the participants. There were totally 15 male students and 18 femalestudents and 72 percent of them had passed CET-4. Before they filled the questionnairesand English relative clauses tests, the requirement were informed that the papers shouldbe finished alone and the time would be limited within 20 minutes.

Conclusion


According to the data in the present investigation, this study is mainly focused onthe exploration of the attrition sequence of English relative clauses in Chinese contextand the effect of the three factors,namely PLPA,TOA and gender, on the attritionsequence. The major findings are as follows;Firstly, the attrition sequence of English relative clauses in Chinese context isidentified S0〉SS>00〉〇S (‘>,means ‘prior to be attrited,),which is justified by theRegression Hypothesis. The detected attrition sequence of English relative clauses canroughly reflect the inverse sequence of the acquisition of English relative clauses inChinese context, which means “first acquired, last attrited; last acquired,first attrited".Secondly, based on the fact that the English proficiency level prior to attrition has acertain effect on English relative clauses and participants with CET-4 and those withoutCET-4 have a different retention of English relative clauses, the Critical ThresholdHypothesis can be roughly supported in the present study. However, the accurate valueshould be further investigated.
